The family is, according to sociologists, the basic structure of society, found among all peoples. Made up of individuals bound together by feelings of love, esteem or shared interests, it continues to be the most important structure, the one that shapes the make-up of societies. From the earliest times to the present day, this structure has undergone numerous changes, each era having its own particularities. Whereas in the past marriages were arranged by masters or parents and were conditioned by social status, today modern couples enjoy freedom and can decide their own fate according to their feelings and their fulfilment.
The Romanian family between traditions and modern currents
As with other peoples, family relationships among Romanians have evolved too. Whereas almost half a century ago only relationships between men and women were permitted, sealed with gold engagement rings and wedding rings, and cohabitation was frowned upon, today society is more permissive and cohabitation has become an increasingly attractive option for many young Romanians. The traditional Romanian family, bound by the sacrament of marriage, nevertheless continues to be the main form of organising society, making it stronger, more balanced, a favourable environment for the raising and development of children. Modern society places emphasis on prudence, on decisions taken without haste with a view to establishing solid, long-lasting relationships. Young people choose long engagements and so-called trial marriages over traditional marriages. Communication, socialising, romantic relationships and the bonds that form between young people are now the main elements that are emphasised! Compared with the traditional Romanian family, with its emphasis on the authority of the man and whose main purpose was procreation, modern couples focus on getting to know each other, on self-knowledge and on strengthening their relationship. In modern society, families are formed around intense feelings and shared principles; they aren't united by the decisions of third parties, as happened in the past. People have an independent lifestyle and responsibilities are shared by mutual agreement. Young people are emancipated, women's ambitions are just as important as men's, and marriage is a step taken, in many cases, after a good few years of engagement.
Marriage, an important step based on compatibility
According to specialists in social relationships, young people venture to bring gold engagement rings and wedding rings into their lives only after they reach a certain level of maturity and after they enjoy personal fulfilment. Procreation and the raising of children are only considered once a high degree of maturity is reached and once certain steps have been taken in the careers of both partners. In today's society, young people think carefully about each stage before considering expanding the family. Those who do nevertheless choose to formalise their relationship through marriage attach great importance to the event. Romanian weddings continue to be sprinkled with deeply rooted local customs. Wedding parties are, as in the past, celebrated together with family members and close friends. Finally, it must be mentioned that the family remains the main basic structure of modern society, and within this structure people develop as unique individuals; the family formed through marriage allows each of the young partners to experience wholly special emotional bonds, which contribute to personal growth.
