Diamond certificates are documents issued by accredited and internationally recognized institutions and represent the unique fingerprint of the stone. At the same time it will offer you the possibility to confidently buy the diamond you want by ensuring that same is a genuine diamond. The certificate will contain a complete description of the diamond's quality and information about its cut, carat, clarity, color, measurements, polish, etc.
Color is evaluated by comparing it to the Gemological Institute of America’s color scale. The scale goes from D to Z, where D is the most translucent and most valuable, and Z goes towards yellow, having a lower value.
Clarity is an evaluation of every blemish or inclusion within or on the surface of the stone. The type and position of these inclusions determines the degree of clarity and value. The certificate will display a schema of the stone's inclusions. They are noted as follows: "crystals", "feathers", "pinpoints", "naturals", "scratches" and "clouds" among others. Because every diamond is unique, the sketch is like a fingerprint for identifying every particularity of the stone. Not all laboratories include details of the diamond's inclusions in the certificate.
Carat is the weight of the diamond. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams, or 0.2 grams. Measurements of the diamond are defined in millimeters.
Cut is not classified the same way by all laboratories. AGS for instance, ensures an evaluation of a diamond's cut on a scale from 0 la 10, where 0 is the cut with ideal proportions and 10 is the less remarkable cut. Other labs will define the Cut as "Excellent", "Very Good", "Good", "Fair" or "Poor". Diamond certificates might also include information about the diamond's depth percentage, surface percentage, table percentage, and general comments regarding symmetry and polish.
Smirneos & Co might use terminology frequently used in the industry for describing diamonds, such as "beautiful", "eye clean", "faceting", etc. However, these terms only express opinions that may change from time to time, depending on changes in classification techniques, equipment or interpretation.
All the diamonds we offer for sale are certified by international laboratories (GIA, IGI and HRD), as compensation for the fact that you are choosing a diamond without seeing it.
